Items Your Moving Company Will Not Move

When you choose to move through a moving company, there are rules and regulations put into place to ensure the safety of your property, our crew, and our equipment. At MVM Moving and Storage, we are equipped to handle a variety of specialty moves but occasionally, there will be items that our team is not able to move because of both legal regulations and the risk that moving it could pose to them and others around them. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with the items that your movers won’t move so that you and your team won’t be caught off guard once moving day comes.

Below is a list of the things that your movers won’t move, and why:

Chemicals

Most household chemicals will display a warning on their labels meant to prevent ingestion and skin irritation. Most of the chemicals common in households are flammable, and packing them into tight boxes or containers while on a hot or cold truck trailer can pose a lot of dangers to both your items and our movers. Here is a list of common household chemicals that movers won’t move put on our vehicles:

  • Acids
  • Ammonia
  • Automotive repair/maintenance chemicals
  • Bleach
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Darkroom chemicals
  • Gasoline
  • Lighter fluid
  • Nail polish remover
  • Paint & paint thinners
  • Pesticides & weed killers
  • Pool chemicals

Combustibles

While this section may seem self-explanatory, there are a great deal of different household items that many people aren’t aware can be combustible under the right conditions. This includes items such as:

  • Ammunition
  • Car batteries
  • Firearms
  • Fireworks
  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Matches & lighters

Important Documents

While these items don’t pose a risk to our movers, it is crucial that you keep them in a separate bag on your person during your move. You may have to refer to these documents at some point for emergencies or providing information, and you won’t see your possessions placed in the moving truck until they reach your next destination. The following list contains some of these documents that you should consider setting aside during your packing:

  • Anything regarding your Social Security Number
  • Cash
  • Checkbooks
  • Deeds
  • Financial statements
  • Identification
  • Medical records
  • Passports
  • Tax returns
  • Treasured photos/family heirlooms (optional)

Perishables

Movers cannot be held responsible for anything that may perish during your move. In addition, in accordance with United States law, we are unable to transport live plants further than 150 miles. Some of these perishables include:

  • Alcohol
  • Any perishable, unpackaged food
  • Live plants

Pressurized Tanks/Bottles

When stored safely in a controlled environment, these objects pose little to no risk to your safety. However, if placed in a moving, uncontrollable environment such as a moving vehicle, these pressurized tanks and bottles can potentially go off or explode. Some of the most common ones that our moves come across include:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Butane tanks and bottles
  • Oxygen tanks and bottles
  • Propane cylinders, tanks and bottles
  • Scuba tanks

Do your best to discuss with your movers what they won’t be able to move on moving day. This will ensure that your move runs as smoothly as possible, and you are prepared for any circumstances that could affect your plans.
